mala
mala
Malas are strings of 108 beads that have been used in Hindu and Buddhist traditions for thousands of years to help focus the mind during prayer or meditation. The mala hangs from the hand, looped over the index or middle finger, with one bead at a time resting between that finger and the thumb. With each prayer, mantra, or affirmation, the thumb pulls the strand forward, moving to the next bead. After 108 repetitions, reaching the center (or "guru") bead, the session ends. If the user wishes to continue, the mala is reversed and the prayers, mantras, or affirmations begin again--do not pass over the guru bead to continue.
